about

Composed for a Twin Cities art project that placed decorated pianos in parks and public spaces, Lilacs and Lightning was originally intended for any intrepid street pianist to sight read with the accompaniment of a smartphone playing back the audio track into the strings. These prerecorded sounds were created on a Virtual Rhythmicon — a Cowell-Theremin invention (created here in JSyn by Nick Didkovsky) that uses ratios of the harmonic series in terms of rhythm as well as pitch. By overlaying their pure overtones and comparing them to the equal tempered approximations found on a piano you get a fragrant and unsettled perfume, rather like the smell of lilac I experienced while riding my motorcycle during a thunderstorm.
